Mexico\u2019s projected presidential winner\u00a0Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a><\/span>\u00a0will become the first female president in the country\u2019s 200-year history.<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum, the favored successor of outgoing President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, vowed to continue in the direction set by the populist leftist leader. But the cool-tempered scientist offers a sharp contrast in style \u2014 and a break with Mexico\u2019s male-dominated political culture.<\/p>\n

“I promise that I am not going to let you down,” Sheinbaum said, greeting supporters in Mexico City\u2019s colonial-era main plaza, the Zocalo.<\/p>\n

The National Electoral Institute\u2019s president said Sheinbaum had between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, while\u00a0opposition candidate X\u00f3chitl G\u00e1lvez<\/a><\/span>\u00a0had between 26.6% and 28.6% and Jorge \u00c1lvarez M\u00e1ynez had between 9.9% and 10.8% of the vote. Sheinbaum\u2019s Morena party was also projected to hold its majorities in both chambers of Congress.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor<\/a><\/span>\u00a0said that her two competitors had called her and conceded her victory.<\/p>\n

The official preliminary count put Sheinbaum 28 points ahead of G\u00e1lvez with nearly 50% of polling places reporting.<\/p>\n

The fact that the two leading candidates were women had left little doubt that Mexico would make history Sunday.<\/p>\n

“As I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone,” Sheinbaum said shortly after her victory was confirmed. “We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters.”<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum will also be the first person from a\u00a0Jewish background<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to lead the overwhelmingly Catholic country.<\/p>\n

She will start her six-year term on Oct. 1. Mexico\u2019s constitution does not allow reelection.<\/p>\n

The leftist has said she\u00a0believes the government has a strong role to play in addressing economic inequality<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and providing a sturdy social safety net, much like her political mentor.<\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s anointed successor, the 61-year-old Sheinbaum consistently led in polls despite a spirited challenge from G\u00e1lvez. This was the first time in Mexico that the two main opponents were women.<\/p>\n

“Of course, I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum with all my respect who ended up the winner by a wide margin,” L\u00f3pez Obrador said shortly after the electoral authorities\u2019 announcement. “She is going to be Mexico\u2019s first (female) president in 200 years.”<\/p>\n

If the margin holds it would approach his landslide victory in 2018. L\u00f3pez Obrador won the presidency after two unsuccessful tries with 53.2% of the votes, in a three-way race where National Action took 22.3% and the Institutional Revolutionary Party took 16.5%.<\/p>\n

Still, Sheinbaum is unlikely to enjoy the kind of unquestioning devotion that L\u00f3pez Obrador has enjoyed.<\/p>\n

In the Zocalo, Sheinbaum\u2019s win did not draw the kind of cheering, jubilant crowds that greeted L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s victory in 2018. Those present were enthusiastic, but comparatively few in number.<\/p>\n

Sara R\u00edos, 76, a retired literature professor at Mexico\u2019s National Autonomous University, celebrated after hearing that G\u00e1lvez had conceded.<\/p>\n

“The only way that we move forward is by working together,” R\u00edos said. “She is going to work to bring peace to the country, and is going to manage to advance, but it is a slow process.”<\/p>\n

Fernando Fern\u00e1ndez, a chef, 28, said he voted for Sheinbaum because of her ties to L\u00f3pez Obrador, using the president\u2019s initials, AMLO. But his highest hope is that Sheinbaum can “improve what AMLO couldn\u2019t do, the price of gasoline, crime and drug trafficking, which he didn\u2019t combat even though he had the power.”<\/p>\n

The main opposition candidate, G\u00e1lvez, a tech entrepreneur and former senator, had promised a more aggressive approach toward organized crime.<\/p>\n

In her concession speech, she said \u201cI want to stress that my recognition (of Sheinbaum\u2019s victory) comes with a firm demand for results and solutions to the country\u2019s serious problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez Obrador claims to have reduced historically high homicide levels by 20% since he took office in December 2018. But that\u2019s largely a claim based on a questionable reading of statistics. The real homicide rate appears to have declined by only about 4% in six years.<\/p>\n

Julio Garc\u00eda, a Mexico City office worker, said he voted for the opposition because of crime.<\/p>\n

“They\u2019ve robbed me twice at gunpoint. You have to change direction, change leadership,” the 34-year-old said. “Continuing the same way, we\u2019re going to become Venezuela.”<\/p>\n

On the fringes of Mexico City in the neighborhood of San Andres Totoltepec, 34-year-old homemaker Stephania Navarrete said she planned to vote for Sheinbaum despite her own doubts about L\u00f3pez Obrador and his party.<\/p>\n

“Having a woman president, for me as a Mexican woman, it\u2019s going to be like before when for the simple fact that you say you are a woman you\u2019re limited to certain professions. Not anymore.”<\/p>\n

She said the social programs of Sheinbaum\u2019s mentor were crucial, but added that the deterioration of cartel violence in the past few years was her primary concern in this election.<\/p>\n

Nearly 100 million people were registered to vote and turnout appeared to be about 60%, similar to earlier elections.<\/p>\n

Voters were also electing governors in nine of the country\u2019s 32 states, and choosing candidates for both houses of Congress, thousands of mayorships and other local posts, in the biggest elections the nation has seen and ones that have been marked by violence.<\/p>\n

The elections were widely seen as a referendum on L\u00f3pez Obrador, a populist who has\u00a0expanded social programs<\/a><\/span>\u00a0but largely\u00a0failed to reduce cartel violence<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in Mexico. His Morena party currently holds 23 of the 32 governorships and a simple majority of seats in both houses of Congress.<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum promised to continue all of L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s policies, including a universal pension for the elderly and a program that pays youths to apprentice.<\/p>\n
