{"id":3962857,"date":"2024-06-18T13:47:12","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T20:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/?p=3962857"},"modified":"2024-06-18T13:49:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T20:49:36","slug":"boeing-ceo-apologizes-relatives-737-max-crash-victims-defends-firms-safety-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3962857\/boeing-ceo-apologizes-relatives-737-max-crash-victims-defends-firms-safety-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing CEO apologizes to relatives of 737 Max crash victims, defends firm&#8217;s safety record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. lawmakers grilled the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-whistleblower-congress-safety-fuselage-c406e90b087ca45f4fd8d426d1eadae1\">Boeing chief executive<\/a> (CEO) Tuesday about the company&#8217;s plans to fix its manufacturing problems and its willingness to heed whistleblowers&#8217; warnings, while relatives of people who died in two crashes of the aircraft maker&#8217;s 737 Max jetliners were in the room to remind him of what was at stake.<\/p>\n<p>CEO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-shareholders-ceo-compensation-investigations-2216aff126c2c48f03294ae3541bf7b6\">David Calhoun<\/a>\u00a0appeared before the Senate investigations subcommittee, which is chaired by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., a Boeing critic. Blumenthal opened the hearing by recognizing the relatives of the crash victims and the family of a Boeing whistleblower\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-whistleblower-suicide-9fe771a97c5745b9c53f24c04141e474\">who died<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This hearing is a moment of reckoning,\u201d the senator said. &#8220;It&#8217;s about a company, a once iconic company, that somehow lost its way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun&#8217;s appearance was the first before Congress by a high-ranking Boeing official since a panel blew out of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-boeing-door-blowout-investigation-alaska-airlines-5c378e8080ae1bf1e3d3f7e68d498d5c\">a 737 Max<\/a>\u00a0during an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-fbi-investigation-crime-lawsuit-oregon-a4ffddc43f2000dd9d9466a335df6a93\">Alaska Airlines flight<\/a>\u00a0in January. No one was seriously injured in the incident, but it raised fresh concerns about the company\u2019s best-selling commercial aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking out:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3961559\/families-boeing-plane-crashes-victims-press-doj-prosecution\/\">Families of those who died in Boeing crashes press DOJ for prosecution<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Calhoun sat at the witness table and fidgeted with his eyeglasses as Blumenthal spoke. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., thanked the CEO for coming to face &#8220;tough questions.\u201d Before giving his prepared opening statement, Calhoun stood and faced the people in the audience holding poster-sized photos of some of the 346 people who died in the 2018 and 2019 crashes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I apologize for the grief that we have caused,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Senators asked Calhoun if Boeing retaliated against employees who reported concerns and if he had ever spoken directly with any whistleblowers. He replied that he hadn&#8217;t but said he would.<\/p>\n<p>The toughest line of inquiry came from Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., who repeatedly asked Calhoun about the size of his salary. Calhoun, who has said he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-ceo-calhoun-0abff1ccc6262ffb03f97c6a619bd1ec\">plans to retire<\/a>\u00a0at the end of the year, earned $32.8 million in compensation last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are cutting corners, you are eliminating safety procedures, you are sticking it to your employees, you are cutting back jobs because you are trying to squeeze every piece of profit you can out of this company,\u201d Hawley said, his voice rising. \u201cYou are strip-mining Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Hawley why he had not resigned, Calhoun answered: \u201cSenator I\u2019m sticking this through. I\u2019m proud of having taken the job. I\u2019m proud of our safety record. And I am very proud of our Boeing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawley interrupted. \u201cYou\u2019re proud of the safety record?\u201d he asked with incredulity.<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun responded, \u201cI am proud of every action we\u2019ve taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawley shot back, \u201cFrankly sir, I think it\u2019s a travesty that you\u2019re still in your job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hours before Calhoun arrived on Capitol Hill, the Senate panel released a 204-page report with new allegations from a whistleblower who said he worries that \u201cnonconforming\u201d parts \u2014 ones that could be defective or aren&#8217;t properly documented \u2014 are going into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-max-jet-incident-crashes-f73fb7b9eaff7f6549c88e958f7b8b38\">737 Max jets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Mohawk, a quality assurance investigator at the 737 assembly plant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-safety-quality-faa-audit-fc3a23505363800e1c6d4debd98c4d74\">near Seattle<\/a>, claims Boeing hid evidence of the situation after the Federal Aviation Administration informed the company a year ago that it would inspect the plant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once Boeing received such a notice, it ordered the majority of the (nonconfirming) parts that were being stored outside to be moved to another location,&#8221; Mohawk said, according to the report. \u201cApproximately 80% of the parts were moved to avoid the watchful eyes of the FAA inspectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous coverage:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3961411\/boeing-tells-federal-regulators-how-it-plans-to-fix-aircraft-safety-and-quality-problems\/\">Boeing tells federal regulators how it plans to fix aircraft safety and quality problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The parts were later moved back or lost, Mohawk said. They included rudders, wing flaps and tail fins \u2014 all crucial in controlling a plane.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA said it would \u201cthoroughly investigate\u201d claims raised in the Senate report. A Boeing spokesperson said the company got the subcommittee report late Monday night and was reviewing the claims.<\/p>\n<p>The 737 Max has a troubled history. After the Max jets crashed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/4cf97e9b0a004cf5a0db401bb1d222e1\">in 2018<\/a>\u00a0in Indonesia and 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-max-crash-passengers-fear-pain-trial-fe75ff7e155f1e6ff4881c830aa7337a\">in Ethiopia<\/a>, the FAA subsequently grounded the aircraft for more than a year and a half. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-justice-department-737-max-82145b25ed988cd8cae0bce3de79ce9d\">Justice Department currently is considering<\/a>\u00a0whether to prosecute Boeing for violating terms of a settlement it reached with the company over allegations it misled regulators who approved the plane.<\/p>\n<p>Mohawk told the Senate subcommittee that the number of unacceptable parts has exploded since production of the Max resumed following the crashes. He said the increase led supervisors to tell him and other workers to &#8220;cancel&#8221; records that indicated the parts were not suitable to be installed on planes.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-administrator-boeing-737-max-senate-4e58c2b21980b34bc72cde7779925fe1\">FAA<\/a>\u00a0briefly grounded some Max planes again after January\u2019s mid-air blowout of a plug covering an emergency exit on the Alaska Airlines plane. The agency and the National Transportation Safety Board opened separate investigations of Boeing that are continuing.<\/p>\n<p>The company says it has gotten the message. Boeing says it has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-airbus-airline-safety-manufacturing-8a7c361e379285c87c9a84638faf9302\">slowed production<\/a>, encouraged employees to report safety concerns, stopped assembly lines for a day to let workers talk about safety, and appointed a retired Navy admiral to lead a quality review. Late last month, it delivered an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-faa-safety-quality-plan-32ebe104f397d20e28f72c173234460b\">improvement plan<\/a>\u00a0ordered by the FAA.<\/p>\n<p>During his Senate appearance, Calhoun defended the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-inspections-aircraft-companies-safety-1cb53f061f7df2f9a45262300a4353a3\">company\u2019s safety culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our culture is far from perfect, but we are taking action and making progress,\u201d Calhoun said in his prepared remarks Tuesday. \u201cWe are taking comprehensive action today to strengthen safety and quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drumbeat of bad news for Boeing goes on, however.<\/p>\n<p>In the past week, the FAA said it was investigating how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/airplanes-titanium-parts-false-records-348c7e984c42fc16a2707a0cb203672a\">falsely documented titanium parts<\/a>\u00a0got into Boeing&#8217;s supply chain, and federal officials examined \u201csubstantial\u201d damage to a Southwest Airlines 737 Max after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/southwest-plane-boeing-dutch-roll-828216b5dc18bfb29264b59debf071f0\">an unusual mid-flight control issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing disclosed that it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-sales-orders-drop-max-eac0c97322ceda981933f0f1e8447b6c\">hasn&#8217;t received a single order<\/a>\u00a0for a new Max \u2014 previously its best-selling plane \u2014 in two months.<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal first asked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024.3.19-PSI-Letter-to-Boeing-CEO-David-Calhoun.pdf\">Calhoun to appear<\/a>\u00a0before the Senate subcommittee after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/boeing-co-aerospace-and-defense-industry-production-facilities-alaska-shawn-pruchnicki-5c352c7059ce4dd39e2a5670ea8b8b3e\">a whistleblower<\/a>, a Boeing quality engineer, claimed that manufacturing mistakes were raising safety risks on two of the biggest Boeing planes, the 787 Dreamliner and the 777. He said the company needed to explain why the public should be confident about Boeing\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-defends-manufacturing-quality-whistleblowers-b8df880c01547638cbf5de240960001b\">pushed back<\/a>\u00a0against the whistleblower&#8217;s claims, saying that extensive testing and inspections showed none of the problems that the engineer had predicted.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department determined last month that Boeing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-violated-settlement-max-crashes-25cde72e154f60adae54177ce35c9176\">violated a 2021 settlement<\/a>\u00a0that shielded the company from prosecution for fraud for allegedly misleading regulators who approved the 737 Max. A top department official said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/boeing-co\">Boeing<\/a>\u00a0failed to make changes to detect and prevent future violations of anti-fraud laws.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors have until July 7 to decide what to do next. Blumenthal said at the start of Tuesday\u2019s hearing that he thinks the Justice Department should prosecute the company.<\/p>\n<p>Families of people who died in the Boeing Max crash in Ethiopia have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/accidents-plane-crashes-u-s-department-of-justice-district-of-columbia-crime-bd0d57c7e2f4487a92ff70f5f3041381\">pushed<\/a>\u00a0the Justice Department repeatedly to prosecute Boeing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not rest until we see justice.,&#8221; said Zipporah Kuria, whose father died in the crash. She said the U.S. government should \u201chold Boeing and its corporate executives criminally responsible for the deaths of 346
